Kayla Corby, born in Fall River, MA, has lived most of her life in the Berkshires, where she continues to make art, while also working as a registered nurse. Although she creates sculptures in different materials, mostly wood, end enjoys making craft items, including soaps, balms, ornaments, and floral arrangements, the corpus of her artwork is two-dimensional, mediumed primarily in oil or charcoal.

The artist’s love of gardening and the natural world is evident in many of her floral pieces and landscapes. And her strong connection to music — she has been playing piano since the age of six — also manifests itself in much of her artwork. Corby is also inspired by her family and her faithful dog, Buddy, a beautiful Siberian Husky mix. She continues to explore art through study and practice — and looking at life deeply.

Creating art allows me to retreat in deep meditation. As I try to create, my senses are heightened, and the ultimate image becomes a puzzle in my mind. I am always searching for something when I begin a new piece, yet I do not know what I am searching for until I have played with an image for a while, sometimes for a long while. For this reason, I don’t feel tied to any medium or style or timeline. I want to keep exploring. Creating art is my own adventure into the unknown.
